Most Americans are Familiar with CBD Products
Cannabidiol (CBD) is everywhere, and patients may already be asking you about it. A recent Gallup poll on Americans' use of CBD products reveals that 50% of Americans are familiar with CBD products, with an additional 14% currently using CBD products.
CBD 101: Helping Your Patients Avoid Confusion

1. What is CBD?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of over 60 active compounds (or "endocannabinoids") found in the cannabis plant. Different endocannabinoids target specific receptors spread throughout the body.

2. Does CBD come from marijuana or hemp? What's the difference?
The main difference lies in the THC content:
If the cannabis plant has a THC content of less than 0.3% = Hemp
If the cannabis plant has a THC content greater than 0.3% = Marijuana
3. What's the difference between THC and CBD?
THC affects the brain by binding to CB-1 receptors in the central nervous system.
CBD is a different shaped molecule that binds to CB-2 receptors outside the central nervous system, in cells and body tissues.

4. Will CBD get me high?
No, CBD will not get you high. THC does. Marijuana has a high concentration of THC, which is the psychoactive molecule (binds with brain cell receptors).
5. How should I take CBD?
Most CBD products are taken orally as oil drops, placed under the tongue and held for 60 seconds before swallowing. It can also be used topically as a cream, ointment, roll-on, or vaporized and inhaled.
6. What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is a liquid extract from cannabis plants containing CBD and other terpenes, typically extracted from various parts of the plant (flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds).
7. How does CBD work?
CBD works by binding to cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system within the body. These receptors are nearly present in every cell and tissue type in the body (hence the seemingly endless uses of CBD).
8. Is CBD legal?
Hemp-derived CBD falls under the jurisdiction of the 2018 Farm Bill, which removed hemp from the Schedule I controlled substances, fueling rapid industry growth. The FDA has not yet approved CBD products for unproven medical benefits. CBD products cannot claim any health benefits and have been the target of many warning letters.
9. Is CBD natural?
Yes, CBD is a 100% natural compound directly from the cannabis plant. It is not synthetically made. However, with very loose market regulation, patients must "trust" CBD product manufacturers and their voluntary rigorous testing practices.
10. Are there side effects to using CBD?
As the industry is still emerging, reported side effects are rare and few. Project CBD is a non-profit organization dedicated to rigorously documenting the research progress on CBD.
11. Will CBD show up on a drug test?
CBD products might contain THC, so it's crucial to consult with the CBD manufacturer and request third-party testing to confirm that THC is not present. This is the only way to ensure that each LOT batch won't show up on drug tests for THC.
